Belfast Philharmonic Choir returns to live performance after eighteen months away with a concert celebrating resilience and the power of the voice.

Conducted by Stephen Doughty, the massed voices of the choir will perform Kodály’s beautiful Missa Brevis, which takes influence from Hungarian folksongs and dances as well as the composer's romantic polyphony. Both poignant and hopeful, it provides opportunities for soloists in addition to the full force of the choir alongside organist David Leigh. Members of Belfast Philharmonic Choir learned the piece for a virtual performance last season, and are delighted to now be able to present it for a live audience in Belfast.

The first half of the concert ranges from Seiber’s exuberant Three Hungarian Folk-Songs, through another piece from Kodály in the lovely Esti Dal, and Gjeilo’s well-known Ubi Caritas. They are songs of love and community, faith and humour, all written to show the range and feeling in choral singing. The opening piece of the evening is Butler’s setting of Siegfried Sassoon’s Everyone Suddenly Burst Out Singing, which concludes with the line: “the singing will never be done.”

Join us in Assembly Hall as we return safely to live performance and begin our 21/22 season in that spirit of hope.
